(November 9, 2001) The New York Digital Salon (NYDS) will open its ninth annual exhibition of international digital art on December 17, 2001 at the Visual Arts Museum, 209 East 23 Street, in Manhattan. The Ninth New York Digital Salon is sponsored by School of Visual Arts, the Institute for Computers in the Arts, Leonardo, MIT Press and Artbyte magazine.

The NYDS exhibits the work of prominent digital artists from around the globe--this year 17 countries are represented--and displays the numerous forms in which digital art has evolved. From digital prints to interactive installations; CD-ROMs and computer animation to digital video, audio and music performances, digital art has matured into a respected segment of the visual art world.

At NYDS9, viewers will see a range of detail and complexity in work like Manhattan Transformations by Mark Watkins and Brian McGrath www.skyscraper.org/transformations. Manhattan Transformations is a computer model that simultaneously presents a layered cartographic history of Lower Manhattan and a timeline chronicling the development of high-rise office buildings in Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. The model allows viewers to correlate the cartographic history of 370 years of the islands urban development with the swarming activity of real estate development that characterizes the formation of New York Citys iconic skyline.

New York Digital Salon is one of the most established forums for exhibiting and examining this emerging, multivaried art form and has played a leading role in its development and promotion. Founded in 1992 by educators and artists who are among the pioneers in this field, the New York Digital Salon has been presented in Europe and Asia as well as the United States.

The director of the New York Digital Salon is Bruce Wands, chair of the MFA Computer Art program at the School of Visual Arts. NYDS9 will present a collaborative curatorial perspective by pivotal artists and curators internationally active in the digital art field, including Christiane Paul, adjunct curator of new media arts for the Whitney Museum of American Art; Mark Tribe, founder and executive director of Rhizome.org, an online new media arts community; Jeremy Gardiner, pathway leader of MA Computer Arts at the London College of Music and Media; and Victor Acevedo, a digital artist and faculty member at the School of Visual Arts.

The exhibition catalog, a special issue of Leonardo edited by Christiane Paul, includes essays on digital art and culture. Other activities (soon to be announced) will include Webcasts, panel discussions, gallery talks, performances, and other events that promote digital art and the creative use of technology.

In the fall of 2002, the New York Digital Salon marks its 10th anniversary, and will devote its exhibition - "Vectors: Digital Art of Our Time"--and related scholarly and public activities to showcasing work by international artists selected by leading curators from around the world. The exhibition will be offered for national and international touring.

"We are excited about this years exhibition," says Bruce Wands, "and are also looking forward to next years celebration of the first decade of the salon. We are very proud of the role the NYDS has played in the development of digital art."

The Visual Arts Museum is open Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm; Thursday, 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; and Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Closed Sunday.
